The air in this latest world tasted like ozone and regret. Leo stumbled forward, his boots crunching on what looked like shattered glass, but felt unnervingly soft, like ash. Behind him, the familiar crimson glow of the portal pulsed, a hungry maw promising to swallow him whole if he lingered. Whisker, a sleek shadow against the alien landscape, landed beside him with an almost silent thud.
“Still no sign of anything resembling home, Leo,” she purred, her voice a low rumble in her chest. Her emerald eyes scanned their surroundings, sharp and assessing. This place was a twilight realm, where jagged, crystalline trees clawed at a sky perpetually bruised with shades of purple and grey. Strange, bioluminescent flora pulsed with a faint, sickly light.
Leo sighed, running a hand through his already disheveled hair. “Just more… *weirdness*. I was really hoping that last one would lead somewhere familiar. Even a slightly less terrifying version of home would do.” He kicked at a shard of the glassy ground. “It’s like these things are designed to just… scatter us.”
