The familiar scent of damp earth and pine needles tickled Leo’s nose, a smell so achingly familiar it made his chest ache. He blinked, his eyes adjusting to the dappled sunlight filtering through a canopy of impossibly green leaves. Beside him, Whisker stretched languidly, her tail twitching with a curiosity that mirrored his own. “Well, now,” she purred, her voice a low rumble in the quiet air, “this is a rather pleasant change of scenery, wouldn’t you agree?”

Leo could only nod, his gaze sweeping across the landscape. It was… home. Or a startlingly accurate imitation of it. The same towering oaks, the same moss-covered boulders, the same winding stream that babbled merrily over smooth stones. Yet, something was off. The air hummed with a subtle energy, a faint thrumming that vibrated beneath his skin. The birdsong, while melodious, seemed to hold an extra, almost musical complexity. And the shadows… they stretched a little too long, a little too deep.

“It’s like looking in a mirror,” Leo murmured, his voice hushed with a mixture of relief and apprehension. He took a tentative step forward, his boots crunching on fallen leaves. “But a mirror that’s been… polished a bit too much.”
