The Sea Remembers
Captain Claw, visibly moved, shatters the bottle. The sea rushes back with immense power. Claw vanishes, leaving only the cryptic message 'The sea remembers' etched into the mud, and a relieved, if soaked, crew.
The silence was the first thing that truly unnerved them. Not the quiet of a peaceful dawn, nor the hushed reverence of a starlit night, but a vast, oppressive emptiness where the rhythmic sigh of the ocean should have been. Captain Owl blinked, his large, golden eyes scanning the scene from the familiar perch of *The Night Feather’s* helm. The ship, usually bobbing merrily at anchor, sat marooned, its hull canted at an awkward angle against a seabed of glistening, exposed mud. All around, a graveyard of ships lay equally beached, their masts like skeletal fingers reaching towards a sky that seemed too bright, too distant.
“Where’d it go?” Gizmo’s voice, usually a cheerful chirp, was laced with bewilderment. He hopped on his single, sturdy wing, his other tucked awkwardly against his feathered body. He cocked his head, his small, dark eyes darting from the stranded vessels to the shimmering, empty horizon. “It was here yesterday, wasn’t it? I could hear it humming.”
Beaky, his brow furrowed in concentration, tilted his head, his sharp ears swiveling. He listened, not to the wind, but to something deeper, a phantom echo that seemed to vibrate just beneath the silence. “It’s been taken,” he announced, his voice low and grave. “I can hear it sloshing… somewhere east.”
