Chapter 1
A Hospital Room Surprise
Fourteen-year-old Chloe, bored and restless in her hospital bed, finds her world turned upside down by the unexpected appearance of a shimmering fairy.
The sterile white of the hospital room pressed in on Chloe, a suffocating blanket she’d been trying to shed for three days. Fourteen years old, and her grandest adventure so far was navigating the labyrinthine corridors of St. Jackson's Children’s Hospital. She traced the cracks in the ceiling with her eyes, each one a tiny, uninspiring map. Outside, the sun, a brilliant, mocking orb, painted the sky in hues she could only dream of. Her best friends, Nikki and Zoe, had left hours ago, their promises of future escapades already fading into the hum of the fluorescent lights. Chloe sighed, a puff of air that barely disturbed the stillness. She was an explorer, a cartographer of the unknown, and this room was a dead end.
Just as the familiar ache of boredom threatened to consume her, a flicker of iridescent light caught her eye. It danced near the window, a tiny star that seemed to have fallen from the sky and landed in her dreary room. Chloe blinked, then rubbed her eyes. It wasn’t a trick of the light. The shimmer grew, coalescing into a form, delicate and winged, no bigger than her thumb. It hovered in the air, its wings beating with a sound like the faintest whisper of wind chimes. A fairy. Chloe’s breath hitched. This was no ordinary hospital room surprise. This was something else entirely. The fairy, with hair spun from moonlight and eyes like dewdrops, tilted its head, a smile as bright as a firefly gracing its tiny face. It beckoned, a silent invitation that resonated deep within Chloe’s adventurous spirit. The sterile white walls seemed to recede, replaced by a shimmering portal that pulsed with an otherworldly glow.
