The hum of Ethan’s laptop was a familiar lullaby in the quiet of his apartment, the only sound accompanying the rapid tap of his fingers across the keyboard. He’d spent the better part of an hour crafting a response to Clara’s last email, deleting whole paragraphs, rephrasing sentences, trying to strike a balance between professional warmth and something… more. Her words, vibrant and uninhibited, still echoed in his mind from the previous night. She’d described her process for a new commission, a mural for a children’s hospital, in such vivid detail he could almost smell the fresh paint, almost see the delighted faces of the imagined children. She’d even included a small, attached photo of an initial sketch – a fantastical tree with swirling branches that transformed into gentle, smiling animals. Yet, he found himself wanting to share the intricacies of his world with her, to peel back the layers of steel and glass and show her the art in the engineering. He’d started to write about the challenges of a new skyscraper design, the way light would play on its facade, the flow of human traffic through its proposed atrium. But then he’d paused, his fingers hovering over the keys. Would she find it boring? Would the practicalities of his profession feel like a stark, uninspired contrast to her world of color and freehand expression?

He picked up his coffee mug, the ceramic cool against his palm, and took a slow sip of the lukewarm, forgotten brew. His gaze drifted to his own notebook, lying open on his desk beside a stack of blueprints. He’d barely touched it since reading Clara’s. His usual meticulous entries, the carefully drawn schematics and precise notes, seemed almost… sterile in comparison. He missed the chaotic energy of her sketches, the sprawling words that bled across the page, capturing thoughts mid-flight.
