The Epoch Year
Ally teaches Adam mental powers—telepathy, telekinesis, and mind-shielding—before Eve reveals the Epoch Room, a pocket world where one hour equals a year. The family trains inside for a full year, honing Adam's abilities and bonds. Upon returning after exactly one hour, a scroll arrives announcing the Gathering in two days, and Adam senses the Silent One's watchful presence.
Morning light spilled through the tall windows of the Cronwell estate, casting golden rectangles across the stone floor. Adam sat cross-legged on a cushioned bench in the library, the scent of old parchment and lavender filling his lungs. Across from him, Ally Tanner rested her hands on her knees, her eyes already alight with the pale green glow of channeled life energy.
"The mind is the first shield and the first weapon," she said, her voice soft but firm. "You've learned to weave elements and brew potions. Now you must learn to protect your thoughts and read those of your enemies."
Adam shifted, the watch on his wrist cool against his skin. "I've read surface thoughts before, by accident. But I can't control it."
