Chapter 11
Eve stops Adam to explain origin magic, then the Pure Blood ambush the group. A fierce fight erupts with magic, claws, and swords. The leader expands the null zone, forcing Adam to face it alone or retreat. Chapter ends with the null zone surging toward Adam.
Adam pushed the wall aside. The stone ground against rock with a grating sound that seemed impossibly loud in the silence. He stepped through the gap and found himself behind a massive fallen pillar, its surface covered in moss and ancient cracks. Beyond it, the Heartwood grove opened wide under a moon that hung low and silver. The great tree stood at the center, its trunk like polished silver, its leaves like spun glass, and high above, the Heartwood Blossom pulsed with a golden heartbeat. Around the base of the tree, the cloaked figures of the Pure Blood circled slowly, their steps synchronized, their hoods hiding any trace of face. And between them and the tree, the shimmering dome of the null zone rippled like heat haze over a summer road.
Adam took a breath to move forward, but Eve’s hand clamped onto his wrist. Her grip was iron. “Wait,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “Before you step into that grove, you must understand what the Cronwell blood truly carries. Not just the shadow strand, not just the wolf or the wizard. The Cronwells were the first family to hold origin magic—the magic that existed before the seven families, before the weave itself.”
Adam turned to look at her. “Origin magic?”
