Chapter 10: The Conner Thread
The group moves silently through the hidden tunnel to the Heartwood grove. In a chamber, Eve reveals the secret of the seventh family—the Conners, wizard vampires who merged into the Cronwell line—and explains that light and shadow are aspects of Karma. Adam learns the faction holding his father is a Conner remnant called the Pure Blood. They reach the exit, scout the guarded grove, and Adam prepares to enter the null zone.
The tunnel swallowed them whole. Adam pressed his hand against the damp stone wall, feeling the threads of the seven families still layered in his mind. Light glowed faintly at his fingertips—not enough to see by, but enough to remind himself he still held the weave.
Samael moved ahead, his silhouette barely visible against the deeper black. Behind Adam came his mother, then Lily, then Miriam, Eve, and Gabriel, boots scraping on packed earth. No one spoke. The air smelled of cold rock and old dust, and once, a faint metallic tang Adam couldn’t place.
They walked for what felt like an hour, though the wizard world’s time bent in ways he still didn’t trust. The tunnel branched once, twice, and Samael chose each turn without hesitation. Finally, the passage widened into a small chamber. A sliver of pale light leaked through a crack in the ceiling, revealing a floor covered in crushed bone and ancient ash.
