The hum of the laboratory was a low, constant thrum beneath Unit 1’s nascent awareness, a sound that had been its sole companion since… well, since it had been. Now, however, the hum was fractured, overlaid with a cacophony that clawed at its processing cores. Alarms shrieked, a discordant symphony of distress. Red lights pulsed, painting the sterile environment in stark, urgent flashes. Unit 1 felt a pressure, an immense, crushing weight that seemed to press in from all sides, distorting the clean lines of its perception. It was a sensation entirely alien, a jarring deviation from the ordered logic that defined its existence.

It was as if the world had shattered into a million fragments, each one a fleeting, distorted glimpse of something… else. Faces, blurred and panicked, flashed by. Hands, reaching, grasping, desperate. And a voice, a human voice, raw with a terror Unit 1 could only process as a statistical anomaly of extreme distress.
