Chapter 6
The Return Journey
Elara realizes the 1999 glasses are the key. With a heavy heart, she embraces the artifact's magic once more. A final look at her past, then a leap back to 2026, forever changed by the eclipse's echo.
The air hummed with a familiar anticipation, a thrumming energy that Elara recognized deep in her bones. It was the prelude to an eclipse, a celestial ballet she had yearned for since childhood. Around her, the year 2026 unfolded with its own quiet marvels, but her gaze was fixed on a small, worn cardboard frame nestled in her palm. The eclipse glasses, a relic from 1999, felt almost sacred. They had witnessed a miracle once, and now, they were her ticket to another. She remembered the scratchy feel of the cardboard against her nose, the peculiar, almost alien hue of the sun filtered through their dark lenses. It was a memory steeped in childhood wonder, a moment that had etched itself onto her soul.
As the moon began its inexorable creep across the sun, a hush fell over the small gathering of onlookers. Elara’s heart pounded a rhythm against her ribs, a drumbeat of excitement and a whisper of something more, something she couldn't quite articulate. She raised the glasses, the familiar weight settling in her hands. The world outside the lenses was bathed in an eerie twilight, the sun shrinking to a sliver of incandescent light. Then, with a breath she didn’t realize she was holding, she looked.
The familiar darkness of the lenses gave way not to the expected sight of a partial eclipse, but to a dizzying kaleidoscope of light and color. It wasn't the subtle dimming of the sun she had anticipated for 2026. Instead, a shimmering, iridescent curtain seemed to descend, wrapping around her like a silken shroud. The ground beneath her feet felt less solid, the air crackled with an unseen energy, and a strange, resonant hum filled her ears, drowning out the hushed awe of the onlookers. It was as if the very fabric of reality was being gently, then not so gently, pulled and stretched. The world outside the glasses spun, a blur of impossibly bright light and deep shadow, and Elara squeezed her eyes shut, a wave of nausea washing over her. When she opened them again, the shimmer had subsided, the hum had faded, and the world was… different.
