The air hummed with a strange, unfamiliar resonance. Elara blinked, her eyes still adjusting to the sudden, jarring shift. The vibrant, almost sterile light of her 2026 backyard had dissolved into a softer, more diffused glow, the kind that clung to the hazy summer afternoons of her youth. Panic, cold and sharp, pricked at her. Where was she? The familiar oak tree stood sentinel, its branches reaching towards a sky that was, impossibly, the same shade of bruised twilight she remembered from so long ago. But the landscape surrounding it felt subtly wrong, the garden beds less manicured, the fence a shade lighter.

She patted her pockets, her fingers finding the smooth, worn plastic of the 1999 eclipse glasses. They were still there, a comforting weight against her thigh. But the world… the world was not. The faint scent of honeysuckle, so potent and nostalgic, hung heavy in the air, a perfume of a forgotten summer. She took a hesitant step, her sneakers crunching on gravel that seemed coarser, less refined than the carefully laid path she knew. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, and for a dizzying moment, Elara felt as though she were caught in a dream, a vivid, hyperreal memory playing out around her.

Then, the sounds began to filter in. The distant rumble of a car, a sound that seemed somehow… deeper, more resonant than the electric hums she was accustomed to. The chirping of crickets, a more robust, insistent chorus. And then, the most startling sound of all – the high-pitched, delighted squeal of a child.
