The air in the cramped, makeshift camp was thick with the scent of damp earth and the lingering aroma of Liam’s surprisingly palatable campfire stew. Outside, the jungle pressed in, a symphony of unseen creatures and rustling leaves that both soothed and unnerved Mai. She traced the worn parchment of the map again, the firelight dancing across its cryptic markings. They had reached a plateau, a temporary respite from the relentless climb, but the map’s secrets had only deepened.
“It’s like the cartographer was playing a game with us,” Mai murmured, her finger hovering over a series of intricate symbols that looked more like celestial constellations than geographical markers. “These aren't just directions; they’re riddles.”

And frankly, I’d rather not share the spoils with a crowd.” He met her gaze, his eyes glinting in the firelight, that familiar blend of amusement and something harder to decipher.
