The jungle canopy, once a vibrant emerald shield, now pressed in, a suffocating blanket of shadow and humidity. Rain, relentless and heavy, turned the earth beneath their feet into a treacherous mire. Mai stumbled, her boot sinking deep, yanking her back with a sudden, violent lurch. Liam’s hand shot out, a blur of motion, catching her arm just as she pitched forward. His grip was firm, calloused, and for a fleeting second, a jolt of something other than fear ran through her.

“Careful there, bookworm,” Liam’s voice was a low rumble, laced with a familiar taunt, but beneath it, a thread of genuine concern. He pulled her upright, his eyes, the color of a stormy sea, meeting hers. The usual glint of mischief was dimmed, replaced by a weariness that mirrored her own.

They had been following the map’s increasingly cryptic clues for days, pushing deeper into the uncharted interior of a land that seemed determined to swallow them whole. The humid air thrummed with the unseen life of the jungle, a symphony of buzzing insects and screeching calls that had, at first, thrilled Mai with its wildness. Now, it felt oppressive, a constant reminder of their isolation, their vulnerability.
