It had been a week since they’d left the relative safety of the last oasis, a week of navigating treacherous ravines and deciphering cryptic symbols etched onto weathered stones. A week of growing accustomed to each other's presence, of grudging respect slowly blossoming into something far more complex. They had learned to anticipate each other's moves, to communicate with a mere glance. Liam’s roguish charm had softened around the edges, revealing a surprising depth of loyalty, while Mai’s initial apprehension had given way to a fierce determination, her librarian’s intellect proving a formidable asset in their pursuit.

Their first inkling of being followed had been subtle. A snapped twig where no wind blew. A shadow that detached itself from a rocky outcrop too quickly to be natural. Then came the more overt signs: footprints that didn't match their own, a carefully placed cairn of stones that seemed to guide them towards a specific, more perilous path. It was Liam who first voiced their fears.
