The jungle canopy, a dense, emerald quilt, choked out the sun, leaving Mai and Liam in a perpetual twilight. Sweat, a constant companion, slicked their skin, and the air hung thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. Every rustle in the undergrowth sent a jolt of adrenaline through Mai, a thrilling counterpoint to the quiet hum of her usual existence. This was it, the adventure she’d only dared to dream of, unfolding in a symphony of buzzing insects and the distant, guttural cries of unseen creatures.

Liam, perpetually a few steps ahead, his movements fluid and economical, paused to examine a series of faint markings etched into the bark of a colossal banyan tree. Mai scrambled to catch up, her heart thrumming with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The map, a fragile parchment that felt impossibly ancient in her hands, was more cryptic than helpful in this tangled wilderness. It hinted at landmarks, celestial alignments, and riddles, but offered no clear route through the unforgiving terrain. "Are you sure?" she asked, her voice a little breathless. "It just looks like scratches to me."
