The chipped ceramic mug felt cool against my palms, a small anchor in the swirling vortex of my thoughts. Outside, the city hummed, a distant symphony of normal. Inside, my world had taken a sharp, nauseating turn. Violet sat across from me, her brow furrowed with a concern that had become a permanent fixture in her expression. The air between us was thick with unspoken questions, heavy with the residue of the past few weeks – the whispers, the sideways glances, and the sudden, violent lurches of stomachs that had nothing to do with bad food.

It had started subtly, a ripple in the placid pond of my life. People would flinch, recoil, their eyes darting away as if I’d sprouted an extra limb. A cashier’s hand would tremble as she passed me my change. A bus driver would grip the steering wheel a little tighter when I boarded. I’d chalked it up to coincidence, to the general anxieties of modern life. Who wasn’t stressed, right? But the incidents grew, coalescing into a pattern too undeniable to ignore. It was like a static charge, invisible but potent, emanating from me.

Then came the incident at the farmer’s market. A glorious Saturday, bursting with the scent of ripe strawberries and fresh bread. I’d been feeling particularly keyed up, a low thrum of anxiety about a looming work deadline vibrating beneath my skin. Suddenly, a wave of dizziness swept through the stalls. A woman clutching a bouquet of sunflowers swayed, her face pale. A burly man unloading a crate of artisanal cheese let out a strangled gasp and doubled over, his face a sickly green. It wasn’t just one or two people; it was a synchronized, involuntary expulsion of bile from a dozen individuals within a twenty-foot radius. And then, amidst the stunned silence and the retching, I heard it. A hushed, desperate whisper from a woman pressed against a fruit stand, her eyes wide with terror: “The… the jupecian.” And then she, too, vomited.
