Chapter 5
Safe Haven
After what felt like an eternity, weaving through ancient trees and crossing babbling brooks, Lucy’s whiskers twitched with recognition. 'That’s it!' she squeaked, her voice filled with relief. Before them lay a small, perfectly concealed burrow, nestled amongst the roots of a giant oak. Lucy scampered inside, then peeked back out, her eyes shining. 'Thank you, Teva,' she whispered, her fear replaced by a profound gratitude. 'You were so brave. You saved me.' She watched Lucy disappear into her cozy home, a sense of quiet accomplishment settling over her.
Teva’s paws ached, not from exhaustion, but from a pleasant weariness that came with a day well-spent. Suddenly, a rustle in the undergrowth startled her. Teva’s ears perked, her husky instincts on high alert. She expected a squirrel, perhaps a curious deer, but instead, a small, quivering ball of fluff emerged. It was a rabbit, its nose twitching frantically, its large, dark eyes wide with a terror that mirrored the shadows of the forest.
“H-hello?” the rabbit whispered, her voice barely a breath.
