Claudia confides in Intern, revealing fragments of her struggle. He must now choose between exposing her potentially criminal activities and risking his career, or aiding her and compromising his journalistic ethics.

The salt-laced air, thick with the scent of hibiscus and something far more exotic – was it cardamom? – did little to soothe the knot in my stomach. It was the kind of knot that had become all too familiar, a tightening coil of unease that coiled itself around my gut whenever the promise of relaxation began to fray. I’d come to Acapulco seeking oblivion, a white-sand purgatory where the ghosts of my last ‘accidental’ case couldn’t find me. I’d pictured endless days of sun-drenched indolence, mai tais with tiny umbrellas, and the blissful absence of anything resembling a story. Then, Claudia had walked into my periphery, a supernova of dark hair and even darker eyes, and my carefully constructed peace had imploded.

Now, sitting in a secluded alcove of the resort, the waves a distant murmur, she was finally talking. Not the carefully curated anecdotes of her ‘import/export’ business, the vague mentions of ‘logistics’ and ‘international markets,’ but something raw, something that scraped at the edges of her carefully constructed composure.

“It’s not just about the money, you know,” she began, her voice low, barely a whisper against the gentle lapping of a nearby fountain. She traced the rim of her untouched margarita, her gaze fixed on the condensation beading on the glass. “It’s about… building something. Something that can’t be taken away.”
