The salt spray still kissed my face, a phantom embrace from the Pacific that had, for a glorious week, felt like the only thing I needed. My acapulco tan was deepening, the mai tais were flowing, and the only deadlines I faced involved the sun dipping below the horizon. Chapter Six had, thankfully, ended with me breathing, a novel concept after my last few "assignments." I was, for the first time in what felt like years, actively seeking oblivion, a blissful ignorance that allowed me to forget the creeping cynicism that had begun to cloud my once-bright journalistic ideals.

Then Claudia walked into the open-air lounge, and oblivion shattered like a dropped glass on the tiled floor. It wasn’t just her beauty, though that was undeniable, a cascade of dark hair framing eyes that held the depth of the ocean at midnight. It was the way she moved, a confident glide that spoke of a woman who knew exactly where she was going and how to get there. Our eyes met, and the air between us crackled, a sudden, electric tension that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. It was the kind of spark you read about in bad romance novels, the kind I’d always dismissed as cliché, until it happened to me, with a woman who was clearly in a league of her own.

She spoke of global markets, of supply chains and logistical nightmares, of a life lived on the move, always one step ahead. It was fascinating, her passion for her work, the sheer scope of it, a sprawling empire of import and export that spanned continents. I, in turn, found myself sharing fragments of my own life, carefully edited versions that omitted the near-death experiences and the gnawing moral quandaries. I wanted her to see me as the relaxed vacationer, not the accidental detective.
