The turquoise water of the Pacific, impossibly bright under the Acapulco sun, had begun to feel less like a balm and more like a shimmering, deceptive veil. For a week, I’d been a contented castaway, my usual gnawing curiosity dulled by the rhythmic crash of waves and the intoxicating sweetness of rum-laden mai tais. My notebook, usually a well-worn extension of my hand, lay buried somewhere beneath a pile of resort wear, its pages innocent of the kind of stories that had, until recently, been my life. Her body tensed, a subtle but undeniable rigidity that I, after my recent adventures, had become all too attuned to.
