The salt spray kissed my face, a welcome change from the acrid smell of gunpowder and desperation that had clung to me like cheap cologne for weeks. Here, under the relentless Mexican sun, the only danger I anticipated was a sunburn and perhaps a mild hangover. My mai tai, a vibrant concoction of rum, curaçao, and pineapple juice, sweated in my hand, its condensation mirroring the beads of sweat on my brow. Acapulco. The name itself was a promise of escape, a whisper of languid days and star-dusted nights. I’d earned this. After the… unpleasantness in Prague, a period of forced hibernation was precisely what the doctor, or at least my frayed nerves, ordered.

Then she appeared, a shimmering mirage against the azure backdrop of the Pacific. Claudia. Even the name sounded exotic, like a tropical flower with a hidden thorn. She moved with a grace that made the swaying palm trees seem clumsy, her laughter a melody that cut through the gentle murmur of the waves. We met, as cliché as it sounds, by the pool. A rogue frisbee, a clumsy dive, and suddenly I was sputtering, not from the water, but from the sheer, unadulterated impact of her presence.

The chemistry between us was immediate, a jolt of electricity that crackled in the humid air. It was the kind of connection that made you forget your own name, let alone the last near-death experience that had sent you fleeing across continents. She was intelligent, witty, and possessed a worldly charm that belied her youthful appearance. We talked for hours, about everything and nothing, about art and travel, about dreams and desires, and about the intoxicating feeling of being utterly, blissfully alive.
