The salt spray kissed my face, a familiar caress that usually felt like a balm, a promise of escape. But this time, it carried a different scent, a tang of something complex and unsettling, like the lingering perfume of a dangerous liaison. I swirled the amber liquid in my glass, the ice clinking a mournful rhythm against the condensation. Acapulco. Paradise. A place I’d dreamt of, a stark contrast to the adrenaline-fueled sprints and hushed whispers that had defined my recent past. I’d come here to forget, to unplug, to simply *be*.
And then there was Claudia.
Her laughter, a bright, melodic chime, still echoed in the chambers of my memory. The way she’d leaned in, her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, glinting with an amusement that felt both genuine and… calculated. We’d met under the languid sway of palm trees, the kind of meet-cute that belonged in a cheesy rom-com, not in the life of an intern who’d recently discovered the hard way that reality often wore a much more sinister mask. Our chemistry had been immediate, a spark that ignited with the ferocity of a wildfire, a potent blend of attraction and something I couldn’t quite name. It was the kind of connection that made you believe in fate, in kismet, in all the romantic nonsense I’d once dismissed as fluff.
