The salt spray still kissed my face, a phantom caress from the waves that had crashed so violently just hours before. The air, thick with the scent of hibiscus and something sharper, something metallic that lingered from the chaos, felt heavy on my lungs. Acapulco. I’d come here seeking oblivion, a blessed silence after the cacophony of my last ‘accidental’ case. Instead, I’d found a different kind of storm, one that had raged not on the ocean’s surface, but within the gilded cage of Claudia’s world.
The room was a testament to my survival. A shattered lamp lay like a fallen monument on the plush carpet, its ornate base twisted. A faint, coppery scent, barely discernible beneath the expensive air freshener, clung to the drapes. My knuckles throbbed, a dull, insistent ache that was a constant reminder of the choices I’d made. Claudia was gone. She’d vanished as expertly as she’d navigated the treacherous currents of her business, leaving behind only a void and a knot of conflicting emotions in my gut.
I sank onto the edge of the king-sized bed, the crisp linen cool against my skin. My reporter’s brain, the one I’d tried so desperately to lull into a coma with umbrella drinks, was already whirring, cataloging the events, dissecting them with a clinical detachment I didn't feel. The glint of the rival’s blade, the desperate plea in Claudia’s eyes, the sickening thud as the fight ended – it replayed like a grainy film reel behind my eyelids.
