The salt spray kissed my face, a welcome change from the stale air of my apartment. Acapulco, in all its sun-drenched glory, was exactly what the doctor ordered. Or, more accurately, what my frayed nerves demanded. The spilled secrets, the near-death experiences, the gnawing guilt of a story half-told – it all felt a million miles away as I clutched my mai tai, the syrupy sweetness a temporary balm. The resort hummed with a lazy, tropical energy, a stark contrast to the frantic pulse of my last assignment. I’d sworn off danger, at least for a while. I was here to decompress, to let the sun bake the cynicism right out of me.

Then I saw her.

She was perched on a stool at the swim-up bar, her laughter a bright, melodic counterpoint to the gentle lapping of the pool. Her hair, the color of dark honey, was pulled back loosely, tendrils escaping to frame a face that was all sharp angles and soft curves. When she turned, her eyes, the shade of a stormy sea, met mine. There was an instant spark, a jolt of recognition that had nothing to do with knowing her. It was the unspoken language of attraction, a silent acknowledgment that the universe had just nudged two orbits into a collision course.
