The salt spray kissed my face, a welcome change from the acrid scent of gunpowder that had clung to me for weeks. My mai tai, a vibrant sunset in a glass, sweated condensation onto the polished mahogany of the bar. This was it, I’d told myself. Pure, unadulterated vacation. No hidden agendas, no desperate chases, just the rhythmic sigh of the Pacific and the clink of ice. Then, she’d walked in. Claudia. The air had crackled, a silent current passing between us that had nothing to do with the balmy Acapulco air. It was an instant, undeniable pull, like two magnets snapping together.

Now, three days later, that pull had become an anchor, mooring me to a reality far more complex than I’d ever anticipated. The whispers I’d overheard, the hushed phone calls, the furtive meetings – they painted a picture of Claudia that was both dazzling and terrifying. Her “import and export business” was a tapestry woven with threads of legitimate trade, yes, but also with darker, more illicit hues. Diamonds that hadn't seen the light of a customs declaration, pharmaceuticals that skirted regulatory bodies, artifacts that belonged in museums, not private collections. And I, the intrepid investigative reporter intern, was falling head over heels for the woman orchestrating it all.

“You’re miles away, *mi amor*,” Claudia’s voice, a low purr, broke through my reverie. She slid onto the stool beside me, her presence a warm, intoxicating wave. Her eyes, the color of polished obsidian, held a spark of amusement. She knew I was wrestling with something, and she clearly enjoyed the show.
