The salt spray kissed my face, a welcome change from the arid dust of my last case. Acapulco. The name itself promised sun-drenched beaches, endless cocktails, and, most importantly, absolutely no investigative journalism. I’d earned this. After the near-death experience in that abandoned warehouse, my editor had practically shoved me onto a plane, muttering something about "rest and recuperation" that sounded suspiciously like "get lost before you drag us all down with you." So here I was, trading my trench coat for swim trunks, my notepad for a well-worn copy of a paperback I’d never actually read.

My first mai tai was a masterpiece of fruity oblivion, the tiny umbrella a cheerful beacon in the turquoise liquid. I’d found a secluded spot on the beach, far enough from the resort’s boisterous main pool to hear only the gentle hiss of waves and the distant squawk of gulls. This was it. This was relaxation. Until she walked by.

She moved with a languid grace that seemed to command the very air around her, a silhouette against the blinding sun. Her hair, a cascade of dark waves, was caught by the breeze, and a smile played on her lips as she surveyed the beach. She was, in a word, breathtaking. And then, as if sensing my gaze, she turned. Her eyes, the color of deep sea jade, met mine, and in that instant, the world tilted. The tension was immediate, a humming current that shot through me, as potent and intoxicating as the rum in my glass. It was the kind of connection you read about in novels, the kind you secretly hoped for but never truly believed existed.
