The screech of tires was the only preamble, a desperate, tearing sound that ripped through the thin veil of night. I slammed on the brakes, the hulking van skidding sideways, spitting gravel like a wounded beast. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drum solo against the sudden silence. This wasn't just a late-night delivery anymore. This was a plunge into the deep end, and the water was colder than I’d ever imagined.

"What the hell was that?" My voice was a ragged whisper, swallowed by the oppressive dark. I scanned the empty street, the rows of darkened buildings like silent, watchful giants. Nothing. Just the hum of the engine, a nervous counterpoint to my own ragged breathing.

Then, a flicker of movement. A shadow detaching itself from the deeper shadows of an alleyway. My knuckles went white on the steering wheel. This was it. The 'package' wasn't just a package. It was a person. And whoever was coming for them wasn't coming with a friendly smile and a handshake.
