Back at the radio station, Intern's co-host seems oblivious, yet her eyes hold a new intensity. Is she a threat, a reluctant ally, or is she playing her own game in this unfolding chaos?
The hum of the studio was a familiar comfort, a stark contrast to the gnawing unease that had settled in my gut like a cold stone. I ran a hand over the microphone, its smooth, cool surface doing little to soothe my frayed nerves. From my peripheral vision, I caught a glimpse of Anya, my co-host, her profile sharp and defined in the dim light. She was fiddling with her headphones, a small frown creasing her brow. Was it about the broadcast? Or was it about the silent, terrifying knowledge that had passed between us in the back of that van?
“So,” she began, her voice a low murmur that barely cut through the ambient studio noise, “tonight’s playlist is… eclectic, to say the least. Are we feeling introspective, Intern, or ready to rage against the machine?”
I forced a smile, a hollow imitation of my usual on-air persona. “A bit of both, Anya. The world’s a complicated place, wouldn’t you say?” My gaze flickered to hers, searching for a sign, any sign. Her eyes, usually alight with a mischievous spark or a well-practiced indifference, were different tonight. There was a depth there, a swirling current I couldn’t quite decipher. Was it fear? Calculation? Or something else entirely, something that mirrored the confusing pull I felt towards her?
