The engine purred, a low thrum against the asphalt that should have been comforting, a familiar rhythm to my new, clandestine life. But comfort was a luxury I’d long since traded for a steady diet of lukewarm coffee and the gnawing uncertainty of my co-host’s gaze. Anya. Her eyes, those dark pools that could hold the simmering heat of desire or the chilling glint of outright malice, were a constant enigma. One moment, a flicker of something soft, a shared laugh that almost, *almost*, felt genuine. The next, a sharp, appraising stare that made me feel like a specimen under a microscope, dissected and found wanting.
"Just a simple pickup and drop-off," I’d told myself, scrolling through the anonymous ads, the thrill of a new challenge a welcome distraction from the radio station's endless loop of awkward silences and jokes that died a slow, painful death on the airwaves. This driving gig, though. It promised anonymity, a clean transaction, a few extra credits in my pocket. A welcome reprieve from the existential dread of wondering if my next on-air anecdote would land with a thud or, worse, trigger one of Anya’s unnerving silences.
The pickup point had been nondescript, a shadowed alcove on the edge of the city’s industrial district. A nondescript man, shrouded in a nondescript coat, had shoved a nondescript package into my hand, muttering a nondescript address. Simple. Except the package felt heavier than it looked, and the address… it wasn’t a drop-off. It was a destination. A place I was supposed to wait.
