Chapter 20
After the Static
The dust settles. Intern reflects on his unexpected journey from radio host to reluctant hero, the future uncertain but the immediate threat neutralized, his relationship with his co-host forever changed.
The air in the broadcast booth, usually thick with the scent of stale coffee and nervous energy, felt strangely thin, almost sterile. The jarring shriek of static that had been my unwelcome soundtrack for what felt like an eternity had finally faded, leaving behind a silence that was both a relief and a new kind of terror. The enigma wrapped in a riddle, her looks a constant, maddening barometer of my own sanity.
I remembered the frantic scramble, the desperate keystrokes that had rerouted the signal, the moment my own voice, amplified and distorted, had become the very weapon I needed. It wasn't the witty banter I was known for, or the carefully crafted investigative pieces that had earned me my reputation. This was raw, unfiltered fear, a primal scream broadcast to a world I was no longer sure I understood.
