Chapter 18
Signal Interference
Intern and his co-host must work together to disrupt the Controller's broadcast. They face technical challenges and direct opposition, turning the studio into a battleground.
The air in the studio crackled, not with the usual hum of equipment or the nervous energy of an impending broadcast, but with a palpable tension that felt more like static electricity about to spark a wildfire. My co-host, Anya, stood silhouetted against the dimmed console lights, her gaze fixed on the main monitor, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. Was it fear? Determination? Or was that the same calculating glint I’d sometimes caught when she was about to deliver a particularly scathing on-air critique of my joke-telling abilities? Right now, I couldn't afford to overthink it. The Controller’s voice, a chillingly modulated baritone, still echoed in my mind, a phantom limb of their insidious plan. They were broadcasting. "They're rerouting the signal," Anya said, her voice low, almost a whisper, yet it cut through the silence like a precisely aimed scalpel. "Bypassing the primary relays. They’re going for a direct feed, global distribution."
My heart hammered against my ribs. This wasn’t just about a botched rescue mission or a misunderstanding. This was a power play on a scale I hadn't anticipated, even with my history. The Controller wanted to control the narrative, to use this platform, this station, to sow whatever chaos they desired. And I, Intern, the supposed radio host with a penchant for awkward silences, was their unwitting star.
