Intern finally comes face-to-face with the mastermind. The Controller reveals their ultimate plan, a chilling vision of absolute control through media manipulation.
The air in the room was thick, not with the usual scent of stale coffee and desperation that clung to the radio station, but with something colder, sharper. It tasted like ozone and fear. I sat, not in the familiar worn leather of my driver’s seat, but on a hard, unforgiving chair. Across from me, bathed in the sterile glow of recessed lighting, sat *them*. The Controller. I still didn’t know if it was a he or a she, or even a they. The voice on the comms had been a smooth, synthesized baritone, devoid of any human inflection. Now, the face was visible, and it was just as unnerving. A face that seemed to have been sculpted from ambition and indifference, features sharp and precise, eyes like polished obsidian that seemed to absorb all light and warmth.
“Intern,” the voice, now undeniably human but still unnervingly calm, echoed in the chamber. It was a voice that had never known the tremor of doubt or the sting of regret. “You have been… an interesting variable.”
I tried to keep my breathing even, a skill honed over years of navigating situations far more chaotic than a poorly timed joke on air. My hands, usually itching for a microphone or the steering wheel, were clasped tightly in my lap. “Variable? I thought I was just a driver.” The words felt flimsy, inadequate against the sheer weight of the presence before me.
