The co-host's true role is revealed. Her motivations, hidden until now, come to light, forcing Intern to decide if he can trust her, even as danger mounts around them.
The static in my ears wasn't just from the faulty microphone anymore; it was the hum of a thousand unanswered questions, all buzzing around Anya. Her eyes, usually sharp and calculating, were now a swirling storm, mirroring the chaos erupting outside the reinforced walls of the broadcast booth. I’d seen her look at me with a myriad of expressions in the short weeks we’d been on air – amusement, frustration, a flicker of something I’d dared to hope was attraction. But this… this was different. This was raw, unadulterated fear, laced with a resolve that was both terrifying and, dare I admit it, incredibly attractive.
“What was that?” I rasped, my voice barely a whisper against the metallic clang that had echoed through the station. The emergency lights flickered, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters on the soundproofing foam.
Anya didn’t answer immediately. She was staring past me, her gaze fixed on the reinforced glass that separated us from the control room. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the edge of the console, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps. “They’re here,” she finally managed, her voice tight, laced with an accent that suddenly felt a lot more pronounced than usual.
