The sterile glow of the monitor was a stark contrast to the chaotic symphony of alarms blaring in my head. My supposed simple driving gig had twisted into something far uglier, a tangled mess of shadowy figures, a captive I didn't know, and a broadcast that was broadcasting *me*. The Controller. The name itself felt like a cold, metallic taste on my tongue. They craved control, a chilling ambition that echoed in the sterile silence of this unknown room. My investigative instincts, long dormant under layers of awkward radio banter and misplaced jokes, were starting to hum.
I ran a hand through my already disheveled hair, the coarse strands a small, grounding sensation. The room was sparse, functional, betraying no personality. A single chair, a table, and the ubiquitous screen displaying a live feed of… well, of me. Or rather, a version of me that was supposed to be broadcasting. The audio was live, too. I could hear my own strained breathing, the subtle shifts of my weight, amplified into a symphony of nervous energy. They were listening. They were *watching*.
My gaze drifted to the screen, not the one showing me, but the one that had been my initial gateway into this mess. The job ad. “Driver needed. Discreet. Good pay.” Discreet. That was the word that had snagged my attention, a whisper of intrigue in the mundane scroll of online listings. I’d been looking for a distraction, something to pull my mind away from the unsettling gaze of my co-host, Anya, and the suffocatingly potent silence that often hung between us on air. Now, that distraction had become the main event, and I was the unwilling star.
