The cold, sterile air of the studio pressed in, a stark contrast to the humid, charged atmosphere that had been my constant companion for weeks. Now, though, the air wasn't just cold; it was suffocating, thick with the acrid tang of fear and the metallic whisper of something far more sinister. The microphone, once a conduit for my often-fumbling attempts at radio charm, now loomed like an executioner’s axe. My co-host, Anya, or whatever her real name was, was nowhere to be seen. Her usual sharp wit, the one that could cut me down to size or, just occasionally, make my heart skip a beat, was absent. Replaced by a chilling silence that echoed the emptiness of this place.

They’d shoved me into this booth, a soundproof box designed for clarity, but now it felt like a coffin. The ‘Controller,’ a voice that dripped with the smug certainty of absolute power, had laid out the terms. My life, and the life of the person I’d so foolishly agreed to pick up, depended on my performance. A performance I was utterly unprepared for. The mission, the rescue, the whole convoluted mess had spun out of control, and now *I* was the story. The headline. The lead.

“Intern,” the voice crackled through the cheap headphones, the sound tinny and distorted, like a ghost trying to speak through a bad connection. “You have an audience. A very, very important audience. And you have a message to deliver.”
