The sterile scent of the transport vehicle, a faint metallic tang overlaid with the lingering ghost of stale coffee, did little to calm the frantic drumming in my chest. The darkness outside was absolute, a velvet curtain drawn across the world, and the silence inside was even more oppressive, broken only by the hum of the engine and the ragged rhythm of my own breathing. Chapter 10. The Rescue Target. The words echoed in my mind, a grim reminder of the precipice I’d stumbled onto. This wasn’t just a drive anymore. This was… something else. Something that had swallowed me whole.

I’d followed the instructions to the letter, the crumpled note a phantom weight in my pocket. A desolate industrial park, a specific loading bay, a coded phrase. “The nightingale sings a silent song.” I’d uttered it, my voice cracking with a nervousness I tried to mask as professional calm. And then, from the shadows, a figure had emerged. Not the hulking brute I’d half-expected, nor the terrified victim I’d prepared myself for. This person was small, almost bird-like, wrapped in layers of dark, nondescript clothing that seemed to absorb the scant light.

They’d clambered into the back seat, a swift, almost furtive movement, and then, silence. A silence that screamed louder than any siren. I risked a glance in the rearview mirror. A face, pale and sharp-featured, was turned towards me, eyes wide and unnervingly still. They weren’t the eyes of someone who had been rescued. They were the eyes of someone who had seen too much, who carried the weight of secrets that could shatter worlds.
