Aftermath and Reckoning
The truth is out, but the consequences are severe. Intern faces the fallout, his journalistic integrity tested, his future uncertain.
The air in my cramped apartment still tasted of stale coffee and the metallic tang of fear. The broadcast had ended hours ago, a frantic, disjointed ramble that I’d somehow managed to stitch together from the fragments of truth I’d unearthed. My voice, usually steady even when reporting on the most mundane traffic jam, had cracked and wavered, a testament to the sheer terror that had clawed at my throat. The truth was out, or at least, a sliver of it. A blinding flash of it, like a camera bulb going off in a dark room, illuminating just enough to make the surrounding darkness feel even more profound.
I’d hit send on the encrypted file to the few independent news outlets I still trusted, the ones who hadn’t been bought or intimidated into silence. My hands had trembled as I typed the final lines of my accompanying message, a desperate plea for amplification, a desperate hope that someone, somewhere, would pick up the thread and run with it. The knowledge that I’d potentially put myself on the direct firing line of whoever controlled *that* truck, *that* operation, was a cold, hard knot in my stomach.
Sleep had been a distant, mocking memory. Every creak of the floorboards, every distant siren, sent a jolt of adrenaline through me. I paced the small living room, the worn carpet a familiar landscape of my self-imposed exile. The framed newspaper clippings of my past successes felt like relics from another lifetime, mocking me with their crisp headlines and the confident journalist I used to be. Now, I was a ghost in my own life, haunted by the specter of a story I never wanted.
