The flickering neon sign of "Eddie's All-Night Diner" cast a sickly green glow onto the rain-slicked street, a stark contrast to the inky blackness of the alleyway where I huddled. My breath plumed in the frigid air, each exhale a small, desperate prayer against the gnawing fear that had become my constant companion. He’d tried to steer me away from the deeper investigations, back to the safety of the mundane. But the journalist in me, the one I thought I’d buried under a mountain of weather forecasts and traffic jams, had refused to stay down.
