Just a profound, unnatural silence, as if the truck itself had been woven from the quiet.

I’d dismissed it then, a trick of the light, a momentary lapse in my own weary perception. But the unease had festered, a persistent itch beneath the surface of my consciousness. Then came the whispers, the hushed conversations I’d overheard in the periphery of my weather reports, the furtive glances that lingered a beat too long, the unnerving feeling of being watched. The Handler’s presence, a phantom limb of dread, had become a constant companion.
