Confrontation in the Shadows
Intern and Ronnie confront a key operative, leading to a tense standoff. The information gained is vital but comes at a cost.
The alley reeked of stale beer and something metallic, like old blood. Rain slicked the grimy brick walls, reflecting the meager glow of a distant streetlamp in greasy puddles. Ronnie, a shadow in her own right, moved with unnerving silence, her worn leather jacket a second skin. I trailed behind, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Every rustle of a discarded newspaper, every drip of water from a leaky pipe, sent a fresh jolt of adrenaline through me. This was a far cry from the predictable rhythm of traffic reports, a far cry from the safe, sterile studio. This was the underbelly, raw and exposed, and I was neck-deep in it.
"He's here," Ronnie whispered, her voice barely a breath against the damp air. She gestured with her chin towards a deeper recess of the alley, where a hulking figure stood silhouetted against a barely visible doorway. He was built like a brick wall, his broad shoulders hunched, a dark duffel bag clutched in one meaty hand. He radiated an aura of quiet menace, the kind that didn't need to shout to be heard.
"This is him?" I managed, my voice raspy.
