The cold, biting wind whipped around the corner, stinging my cheeks and carrying the distant wail of sirens. It was a familiar soundtrack to my new reality – another Tuesday, another report on the glacial crawl of rush hour traffic and the ever-present threat of a drizzle. My microphone, once a conduit to the city’s pulse, now felt like a lead weight, broadcasting my descent into journalistic purgatory. He was the closest thing I had to a lifeline, a relic from my glory days, a man who’d once championed my bylines. His calls were rare now, laced with a caution that bordered on fear. I answered, my voice a little rougher than I intended.
