The flickering neon sign of the diner across the street cast a sickly green glow on the rain-slicked asphalt, painting my little corner of the world in shades of unease. Each passing headlight felt like an accusation, each distant siren a prelude to my own demise. I was a ghost haunting the edges of my own life, a disgraced journalist reduced to hawking traffic advisories and the day’s forecast to a city that had largely forgotten I existed. But the city, it seemed, hadn’t forgotten me. Not entirely.
The truck. It was the truck that had started it all. A hulking, nondescript behemoth, parked where it had no business being, its cargo shrouded in a silence that screamed louder than any alarm. I’d seen what I wasn’t supposed to see, and now I was the loose end, the anomaly in their meticulously constructed reality.
Mr. Abernathy’s warning, delivered in a hushed voice over a crackling line, still echoed in my ears. “They’re not just moving goods, Intern. They’re moving… influence. And their network, it’s deeper than you can imagine.” Deeper. The word felt like a physical weight pressing down on me, suffocating.
