The fluorescent hum of the diner was a familiar, if unwelcome, lullaby. It was the kind of place where time seemed to congeal, thick with the smell of stale coffee and fried onions. Mr. Abernathy sat across from me, his face a roadmap of a life spent chasing stories, now etched with a weariness that went beyond mere age. His hands, gnarled with arthritis, trembled slightly as he stirred his lukewarm tea. I’d sought him out, a desperate pilgrimage to the wellspring of my journalistic downfall, hoping for a lifeline, a whisper of guidance in the suffocating darkness that had become my life.

“They’re good, Intern,” he said, his voice raspy, like dry leaves skittering across asphalt. He didn’t need me to tell him what ‘they’ were. He’d seen the fallout of my initial blunders, the wreckage of my reputation. He was the editor who’d given me my first break, and the one who’d ultimately signed my demotion papers. Guilt, a constant companion these days, gnawed at me.

“How good?” I managed, my own voice sounding foreign, thin. The street corner, the endless drone of traffic and weather, it had eroded something vital. I felt like a frayed wire, sparking erratically, ready to short-circuit.
