The rain had finally decided to pack it in, leaving behind a slick, shimmering sheen on the asphalt that reflected the neon glow of the city like a fractured mirror. It was just past midnight, and the usual symphony of late-night traffic had dwindled to a mournful hum. My breath plumed in the cool air as I adjusted the microphone, the familiar crackle of static a constant companion. Another night, another weather report about impending drizzle. My journalism career, once a rocket ship, had crash-landed on this very corner, its debris scattered across traffic advisories and dew point forecasts.

A shadow detached itself from the deeper gloom of the alley across the street. Ronnie. She moved with a predator’s grace, her worn leather jacket a second skin. She’d been appearing more frequently lately, a phantom in my periphery, her eyes always scanning, always assessing. Tonight, though, there was a new intensity to her gaze, a coiled tension that vibrated in the humid air.

She crossed the street, her boots making soft, almost apologetic sounds on the wet pavement. “Still chasing the wind, Intern?” Her voice was a low rasp, laced with a weariness that went bone-deep.
