The chill of the pre-dawn air bit at my exposed neck, a familiar sting that had become the soundtrack to my life. My microphone, a relic from a more illustrious past, felt cold and heavy in my hand. “And that’s the traffic report for 4 AM, folks,” I mumbled into it, the words tasting like ash. “Still moving at a crawl on the I-95, so if you’re heading that way, maybe consider a detour through the land of eternal slumber.” I managed a weak chuckle, but the sound died in the vast emptiness of the street. No markings, no company logo, just a matte finish that seemed to absorb the meager streetlights. It moved with an unnerving grace, its wheels barely disturbing the asphalt. And then, the cargo. A glimpse, a fleeting impression through the slightly ajar rear doors, of what looked like… containment units? Gleaming metal, intricate wiring, and a faint, pulsating blue light. It was a sight that snagged in my memory, a splinter of unease that refused to be dislodged.
