The late afternoon sun, a warm hand on Ivy’s cheek, painted the world in hues she understood through touch and scent. The air, thick with the drowsy perfume of honeysuckle and the distant hum of lawnmowers, was a familiar symphony. Beside her, Eliot walked with a steadier rhythm than before, his shoulders less hunched, his steps less hesitant. They were on their usual path, a winding route through the neighborhood that Ivy knew by heart, each crack in the pavement a familiar landmark, each rustle of leaves a whispered greeting.

“It’s a good day,” Ivy declared, her voice bright as a newly polished bell. She tilted her head, listening to the cheerful chirping of sparrows flitting through the oak trees overhead. “The birds are singing like they’ve just won the lottery.”

Eliot offered a soft chuckle, a sound that had once been a rare, fragile thing, but now flowed with a growing ease. “They probably have,” he murmured, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. “They don’t have to worry about homework or… well, anything really.”
