The air in the old study felt thick, weighted with the scent of aged paper and something else… something metallic and sharp, like the tang of an old wound. Eleanor sat behind the heavy oak desk, her hands clasped neatly in her lap. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, seemed to falter at the dusty windowpanes, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters on the walls. I stood before her, the worn leather of the armchair I’d been perched on digging into my thighs, a knot of dread tightening in my stomach. This was it. The culmination of weeks of fragmented dreams, of whispered anxieties, of the gnawing certainty that something was profoundly wrong.
“You wanted to see me, Aunt Eleanor?” My voice sounded thinner than I intended, a reedy thing swallowed by the oppressive silence.
She offered a smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. They were the same shade of pale blue as mine, but hers held a depth of calculation, a weariness that seemed to predate my own troubles. “Alex, my dear. I just wanted to ensure you were… comfortable. After everything.”
