The air in the hidden grove was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and wild. Elara, her heart still thrumming from their frantic escape, found herself in a place even more secluded than her beloved garden. Lumina, usually a blur of white fur, was surprisingly still, her nose twitching, her large, dark eyes scanning the dense foliage. Elara knelt, running a hand over the moss-covered roots of a colossal oak, its branches reaching towards the sky like gnarled fingers.

"Where are we, Lumina?" she whispered, her voice raspy. Lumina nudged her hand, a soft rumble vibrating in her chest, a sound Elara had come to associate with Lumina's comfort and reassurance. But today, the comfort felt fragile, like a thin veil over a vast unknown.

As if summoned by Elara's question, a rustling sounded from the shadows beneath the oak. It wasn't the furtive scurry of a woodland creature, nor the menacing tread of Silas Vane's men. This was a slow, deliberate movement, a presence that felt as old as the trees themselves. From the deepening gloom emerged a figure, impossibly tall and stooped, draped in garments that seemed woven from bark and shadow. His face was a roadmap of wrinkles, etched deep by time and wisdom, his eyes a startlingly clear blue, like chips of a summer sky.
