Lumina, nestled securely in the crook of her arm, was a warm weight, her soft fur a small comfort against Elara’s racing heart. They had been running for what felt like days, though the sun had only dipped below the horizon twice since they’d fled their quiet cottage. The image of Silas Vane’s sneering face, framed by the splintered remains of their garden gate, was burned into her memory. He had been so close, his gloved hand reaching for the Lumina Bloom, its ethereal glow pulsing even in the dim light of their home.
“He won’t stop, will he?” Elara whispered, her voice hoarse. She risked a glance over her shoulder, her eyes scanning the dense undergrowth. The shadows seemed to writhe, each one a potential threat.
Lumina twitched her nose, a soft chuff escaping her. It wasn't a sound of fear, but something more… resolute. Elara felt a surge of gratitude for her companion.
