The frantic scrabble of Lumina’s paws against the dew-kissed earth was the only sound that punctuated Elara’s ragged breaths. The familiar scent of damp soil and blooming jasmine, usually a soothing balm, was now tinged with the acrid tang of fear. Behind them, the distant, chilling echo of shouts and the crunch of heavy boots served as a constant reminder of what they had left behind. Their cozy cottage, her sanctuary, was now a memory fading with every desperate leap into the moon-dappled woods.

Elara stumbled, her ankle twisting on an exposed root. A sharp cry escaped her lips, and she braced for the inevitable fall. But instead of hitting the cold ground, she found herself being gently nudged, then supported. Lumina, her small white rabbit, was pressing against her leg, a soft, insistent pressure that somehow kept her upright. Elara blinked, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Lumina had never done anything like this before. She was always content to nibble clover at Elara’s feet or twitch her nose curiously at a passing butterfly.

“Lumina,” Elara whispered, her voice hoarse. “Are you… are you helping me?”
